Elk at Slippery Ann in the Missouri River Breaks National Monument

Bulls and more Bulls

This weekend (September 21 and 22) we were up in the Missouri Breaks National Monument.  We set up both evenings just before 5 PM to watch one of natures breath taking events.  The place, Slippery Ann Wildlife Viewing area.  This is a protected area where you can view wildlife and no hunting is allowed.  Just after five a few cows were seen coming into view followed by one or two bulls.  As the evening wore on more and more cows with their bulls would appear just like magic over the bank of the Missouri River.  What a show.  Friday night there might have been a total count of 400  to 500 and
Watching his heard
mite have been as many as 600 elk in the field all together.  There were about 50 bulls not counting the spikes were seen the first night.  On Saturday night the count was less only about 300 to 400 elk were seen with about 30 bulls in view.

The show was very eventful both nights with the bulls bugling, fighting and chasing the cows everywhere.  The sounds of the cows could also be heard.  I wish that I had my camera set up to take in the action with video.
On the lookout for more cows
